Victory gardens worked in World War II they will work better today now that we have better irrigation, seeds, fertilizer and pest control methods.

When I bought a house on very tight clay that developer had carelessly scarped off the topsoil I put down some sand, perlite, manure, peat-moss, gypsum, 10-10-10 and 35-0-0 fertilizer on top of the Bermuda grass then ran a rototiller over it twice to make sort of a soil. I put down some leaky pipe for drip irrigation on top of the ground and covered over with black cloth mulch that let water trough but not light so the Bermuda grass and weeds didn't grow and had one of the best gardens in the neighborhood that year. On such a small plot I had to be very careful and not put down too much fertilizer. Having farmed most of my life it helped to know how far apart the prills should be.

Most of us, myself included tend to put way too much fertilizer and pesticide on small patches of ground such as our lawns and gardens.

I am going to raised beds and haul in better dirt. I plan to us removable insulation for better heat control of the soil.

The great part of a garden is you can use any amount of technology you want and get good results.

Btw: I love the concept of "Food Not Lawns" and the "Seed Swap" and would love to see something like this in Atlanta, GA, but I'm not the one to head that up.

Food Not Lawns Springfield, Illinois has been around for about 8 months. We've developed into a loose network of gardeners, and have a web presence here: http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/foodnotlawnsspringfieldil

We meet monthly for skill and knowledge sharing, and also for circle discussions, which are amazing events! We had a seed and plant swap last year, and are planning on doing it again this year. In our outreach, we've worked with a local church to design an intensive garden (and help with questions) for their food pantry give away. We've worked with and tabled at events with our local Stewardship Alliance, who work primarily with small family farmers. Currently, I'm writing my first local food and health column for the local African American paper, finishing research for gardening workshops, and drooling over Baker Creek's new seed catalog.

The number of people I've met who are interested in gardening in my community invigorates me. And really, gardening is just a beginning, a great way to experience community on a personal level. Food not lawns is changing our community, for the enjoyment of our citizenry.
